Gone

Hello everyone,

It’s been a crazy week already. This page was hard to pull off. I knew what I wanted in my head, but actually drawing it, proved to be a real challenge. Hopefully you like it!

I’m away to Australia for a couple of days. My wife and I will be taking in some sights in the “Lucky Country”. As such, I have a guest strip lined up for next week. I’m looking forward to that!

Hope you are all well!

Thanks for reading!

The Cutest ActionMan Adam – by Celina Hernandez!

August 26th, 2010 | by Marc
Posted In: Blog, Uncategorized

You know what happens when you spend too much time on Twitter? You end up meeting awesome, talented people. One such person is Celina Hernandez. Celina and I got talking through Twitter and she is such a great artist! Celina graciously accepted my offer of free stickers, however I was not expecting her to take the time to do her own take on Adam as a response to my sending the stickers!

I could never draw anything this cute. Maybe I should hire Celina to start drawing ActionMan Adam? I think if Adam looked like this, he would have no lady troubles at all. Who can resist those eyes? Seriously.

Thank you so much Celina, I can’t wait to get it framed and on my wall. Celina has a website, you should go have a look!

Also: if you’d like to add me on Twitter, then please do so, you can find me here.

Lending A Hand

Hello again.

This comic is late. My apologies. Hopefully it was worth the wait. I spent some effort trying to make this one work. Then life got in the way of art. As tends to happen from time to time.

How is everyone? Good I hope. I can’t believe we’re at the end of August already! Where is the year going?

Auckland Zinefest 2010 – post event

August 19th, 2010 | by Marc
Posted In: Blog, Uncategorized

Saturday was just miserable, it was raining and awful outside. Even though I knew the Zinefest was being held in a good under cover venue, at the back of my mind I was a little concerned that all the rain might force people to stay home instead coming down to see those of us who were exhibiting at the Auckland Zinefest.

Thankfully, I was quickly proven wrong. In fact it was the total opposite. People not only came out, but there was a lot of them!

I arrived with a bit of time to spare before the 11am begin time. My table buddy was thisisrabbit, and between us, we divided up the share of the table we needed for our wares. Not long after setup and even before the official start time we had people coming around all the tables having a look and striking up conversation.

Generally I find selling my own stuff a very weird experience. You have to be enthusiastic, but not pushy because people that bully sales, suck. Trying to get people interested in content they know nothing about is not an easy task. Thankfully, with an event like the Zinefest you tend to be with other creative people and selling to an audience of like-minded people. It makes everything a whole bunch easier.

Things got manic around lunchtime. Thisisrabbit had a workshop he had to host, and I was left in sole charge of the table for both of our wares. It wasn’t an issue when he left, I was happily sketching for a cool six year old who was asking me questions like “how do you draw so good?” – however it changed fast.

From there the day was busy. I spoke to a lot of very cool people. Young and old. Locals and some from abroad. The whole day was such a good experience. Everyone I spoke to was very interested, encouraging, and the vibe of the show felt very community driven. During the down times I was even interviewed for an Internet TV thing, and for Radio New Zealand. No idea when either of those might show up, but it was an interesting experience!

The day was just too much fun. If you came out and stopped by, thanks! Much love to the organisers for putting on a great show!

Finally, go check out this collaboration doodle over at thisisrabbit‘s Doodle a day Flickr. It was worked on by thisisrabbit, PodgyPanda and myself.

Keeping It Real

Keeping It Real

Hello again,

This page wraps up the flashback scene. I hope you liked that segment of the story!

The weekend was awesome. Aside from the crappy weather, of course. Saturday was spent at the Auckland Zinefest in St Kevin’s Arcade. It was a really great event. So many people braved the bad weather to come out and support those of us who were there selling. It was amazing. I hung out with my man, thisisrabbit and we were both overwhelmed by the supportive people who stopped by our table. If you swung by and said “hi” – thanks so much for making it a memorable event. I’ll blog more about this event later in the week.

Shihad – Killjoy & The General Electric Weekend

August 12th, 2010 | by Marc
Posted In: Blog, Uncategorized

I need to make some stickers that say “powered by rock” or something?

This weekend just past was busy! My man, from Christchurch, Richard  came up to see a couple of concerts with me. While he was a guest in the house I spent the time being a good host, and generally just hanging out with him, something that only happens occasionally as we live on different islands.

The two shows lined up weren’t just any shows though. They were two iconic albums by Shihad, played from front to back. Friday was the more metal of the two – with the earlier album “Killjoy”. Saturday was more rock with the mainstream favourite “The General Electric”. Honestly, I was far more psyched for the Friday show than the Saturday one. Killjoy is just one of those albums that gets in your head. It’s heavy riffs have been the soundtrack to many a drawing session.

It didn’t disappoint. Both Richard and I were surprised at how powerful the album was live. It never gave up. Ending on the epic track “Get up”, the band then came out and played a couple of older cuts both in tune with the metal sound – including “Screwtop” with the longest held feedback before blasting back into the finale of that track. Seriously awesome. The audience were in their metal uniform too. It was all long hair, beards and leathers.

Saturday was wet out, and my car was giving me some issues. We were not as pumped for the second show, but fortunately for us, expectations and reality did not align. The General Electric show was equally as fun. The crowd was definitely more mainstream. More women, less beards. Shihad put in the same effort as the previous night, and as before killed it.

An awesome couple of nights out, seeing a great band, doing great albums.

It Gets Better

Apologies for the late comic!

I knew it was going to be tough this week. I had a house guest. A good friend was up from Christchurch. We don’t get to hang often, so I made sure I was the host with the most – but I had to neglect the art to do so.

We hung out. Played some video games, and took in a couple of Shihad concerts. It was awesome. More on that in the blog later this week. How was your weekend?

Reminder: I’ll be at the Auckland Zinefest – Saturday 14th of August (THIS SATURDAY) at St Kevins Arcade, here in Auckland. Come out and say “hi” to me! All details can be found here.

So bad, it’s good – Hollywood shows us how

August 5th, 2010 | by Marc

What was the last film you saw that was so bad, it was actually enjoyable?

For myself it was 2012. I’m not sure if that film is supposed to be a comedy, but I truly had some good laughs with that one. Understandably, whenever you have a piece of fiction, the audience is going to have to accept some things about the movie that might not adhere to reality. That’s cool, that is half the fun right? If I’m writing a comic, generally there will be something absurd or random that I’ll throw in there because that is something that is hopefully unexpected and enjoyable for the reader.

The problem of whether something becomes bad is generally how they want you to react to the material. Using 2012 as an example, it seems like they want you to take it seriously, and deliver a very Hollywood action packed thrill ride of an experience. However, when everything has to escalate, and you start with something astounding, and step that up with each action beat. It leaves the film sort of anti-climatic. Instead of leaving in awe, you kind of laugh your way through one unbelievable spectacle to the next. By taking itself too seriously, I think it lost me. Setting up a lot of characters only to return to see their demise, or reunion, while the world falls apart around them probably sounded good on paper. The effects guys did their job well too, it looked incredible, but ultimately I just couldn’t get lost in this movie. With too many unbelievable moments, it ended up being a good old laugh fest.

Though, I could have gotten it completely wrong, maybe the aim of the film was to make this big laughable special effects film? You’re not buying that are you? At the very least it will serve as a rulebook for “what not to do”.

Have you seen 2012? What did you think? Or are there other “so bad they’re good” movies I should be checking out that you might want to recommend to me?

All Part Of The Plan

All Part Of The Plan

Surprise in two different scenarios today. One in the story, and the other being, I have made a double sized comic this week.

Hopefully you enjoy the extra effort with this one. I had a few distractions over the course of the week, and got started on it quite late. However, I did get it finished. What a relief!

The weekend was mostly spent on this comic page. I watched a couple of movies while doing so. It was just chilled and nice.

Look at this monstrosity that my wife and I ordered from Sal’s! If we were gamers, we would have unlocked an achievement on finishing this (albeit the next day as leftovers).

This week is super busy. I’ll try and get a comic done for next week, but there is a possibility it could be late. I’ll do my best to get it up on time!

Also. Reminder: I’ll be at the Auckland Zinefest – Saturday 14th of August at St Kevins Arcade, here in Auckland. Come out and say “hi” to me! All details can be found here.
