Can’t we all just get along? – The art of social networking
November 30th, 2009 | by Marc
This weekend I spent some time revisiting sites that I used to contribute to but was burnt out on, and was not frequenting so much. Those two being Flickr and deviantArt. Basically for one reason or another I just stopped using those services. If you look hard enough you’ll find a deviantArt account that I have had since 03 on there. However I decided to start fresh. I am now back, and posting new pics, photos or whatever to both of those sites again. If you are a part of either one of those communities, or both, and you want to add me to your network. Please do!
With deviantArt I’ll only really be posting art. With Flickr it will be a combination of both art and photos that I’ll be uploading. I guess coming up down the track I’ll create a facebook fanpage as well. If you have any other suggestions about places I should be visiting or contributing to, please hit me up and let me know. You can find my email on the “about” page.
Also, don’t forget, I’m all over twitter as well.
Otherwise, I spent the rest of my weekend helping my Mum with some stuff and designing a potential tee shirt design (see above). What do you think of that? Is it something you’d pay for? Or would you prefer something more dynamic. The idea is it would be that electric blue as an ink on top of a navy tee. Feedback is always appreciated.
Hope your weekend went well. New comic tonight!

P.S. – Today was my friend Richard’s (Rich M) birthday – happy birthday dude!
Just dropped off the custom cover to the guy who purchased it off me. It was really cool catching up with him. Plus he worked in the city, and I rarely visit inner Auckland these days. Looking around there were some changes. Including a whole new skyscraper that apparently came out of nowhere? I should have taken a photo of it, now that I am mentioning it. Sorry for my spectacular fail there!
In any case. Now that he has it, I can post the progression of how the custom cover came together. Obviously I was selling something physical, so I went old school on this one. Pencils, inks, and the colour markers to finish it off. The “Hey Ladies” is really me just thinking that, if Adam were to have a song that would represent him “Hey Ladies” by the Beastie Boys always comes to mind. It’s such a good banging track.
Now I’m back in the house. I have a cold Mac’s Gold beer in hand. The weekend has begun.
Fuck yeah.
Don’t forget, I only have limited stock of the custom covers at present. If you would like one, you can hit up the store.
Thanks for reading!

When making art. I tend to always be searching for new interesting artists out there doing their own thing. Particularly when your art is comics. Comics can unfortunately fit into a bit of a generic mold (and I’m guilty of that as well). I try to diversify, by trying lots of different things. In my search for new inspiring artists I came across David Choe. An American artist who ignores the rules and creates his own path. The artwork can be sexually explicit at times and brutally ugly, that’s not to say he can’t do “pretty” or “cute”, but where is the appeal in that? There is a real honesty in his work that you will struggle to find elsewhere. Choe never seems to plan in advance either. He’ll just go with the flow and let the art just flow out from himself when he is painting or drawing. It’s such an earnest approach and his style is so fresh that you can’t help but be impressed.
The other aspect of the appeal with Choe, is the man himself. Dude is just unpredictable and entertaining. There was even a film made about him, which I would love to see but hasn’t had a general release yet (who knows whether it will or not?). You can check the trailer right here:
Any trailer which uses the song “Roots” by Sepultura has got my vote! Doesn’t that film look awesome?
Also worth watching. Season 1 and 2 of “Thumbs up”. A Video Journal of David Choe and Harry Kim’s journey across the USA. One season goes West to East, the other South to North. Both are intriguing and fun watches. You get to see these guys interact with the people who they hitch with, the vagabond’s across America, and some of the forgotten places in that extremely large country. You can watch Season 1 and 2, at the Vice TV website. If you want to start form the beginning, I have made it easy for you, go right here.
For more on David Choe. Check out his website and his blog.

Drafting ideas for the new webcomic and screenprint madness!
November 25th, 2009 | by Marc
Lately I’ve been trying to sit down and do a lot of writing. Trying to get a sense of where I want Adam to go in his universe. If you don’t know by now, Adam is based on a real person and the world he inhabits is a real city. This doesn’t mean that I’m absolutely fixing this story to reality however. The absurd is going to be just as much a part of this comic as anything else.
What I have been trying to do, is figure out the overall direction that I want to take with the story. The challenge will be writing this thing open ended. I’ve always made these mini story arcs, with a gag ending and then moved on to a new story from there. Now I need to move these characters in and out of these jokes, and not finish the story on those climaxes. Who doesn’t like a challenge though? Comics are fun. I think I have some good ideas. I just hope everyone else will enjoy.
I’ve been looking into the whole gaming system thing lately. Will I ever get one? Who the hell knows? Probably not. They’re not the most efficient way of spending time. However, there is a temptation there for sure. With HD TV’s and wireless remotes, excellent graphics and usually some decent hours of game play ahead of you, well, there is enough reason to never leave your couch again I guess. Just make sure you are well stocked up with food.
Last night a couple of new screen prints arrived into the house. Man. I have far too many things I need to get framed now! Here are the two new ones that arrived last night. This first one: King of Crabs, I saw the “making of” process online. Screen printing is fascinating, and it was really cool to see the breakdown of the printing process. Plus its a great colourful print, and will look amazing on the wall. Win/win!

Details:

I also picked up this bad boy. Nuff said about this one!

Finally, at the top of the post is a custom cover I started. I actually finished it last night, but the person I have drawn it for has not yet received it. I will make sure to post the finished result later in the week after they have viewed it.

Purchasing excellent art + update to the store!
November 16th, 2009 | by MarcI’ve been buying a lot of art lately. It’s not really been planned, but I just keep seeing some cool art being released, so I purchase it. Having recently moved into a new place, the dilemma now is. ..where do I now put all this art? Do I have enough room on my walls to even get it all up? It’s a good problem to have though, I’ll admit. I guess even if there wasn’t enough room for all this art, I could rotate pieces around to keep the walls interesting. Instead of messing with the furniture arrangements I can switch art pieces in and out. If I had the time, I’d look into a framing workshop of some sort too, as the framing of all these pieces is costing a pretty penny! Ha ha!
So would you like to see some of the recent bounty?

Well, I was able to pick up one of these cool Paul Pope prints. It’s a 2 colour screen print. I love the way that Paul can convey movement and energy with his art. The dude is a master, so when I saw this print for sale. I knew it would be an affordable way of getting some of his work on my wall.

I got this rad 5 colour screenprint called “Stormfront” by Jim Houser for my wife. Jim Houser paints some of the coolest art you’ll see. His palate of softer colours is always pleasing on the eyes and I was able to secure one of these prints, which was very exciting. Both for myself, but particularly for my wife, who adores his artwork. This screen print was of amazing quality, and had a embossing seal on the paper, and the paper was archival Cotton Paper. It was very well put together. Also recommended, Jim has a book of his work out called “Babel“. Which you can get through Amazon.

Finally, my friend Podgypanda stopped by on Saturday night. I managed to get one of these bad boys off him. A wooden laser print. The detail is immense! Because its wood, it just makes his art even more interesting because it is something different. Looking forward to picking out a spot and having this piece representing up on the wall somewhere soon as well.
I’m adding a couple of new* (*variations) items to my store tonight. You’ll be able to now find a new colour way of the Knuckles Tee. Which is Black on white. The other item is the Custom Cover version of the comic. It’s the same as the regular cover, but for a few bucks extra I’ll draw you a one off cover of Adam on the front. Great ideas for Christmas maybe? Ha ha!
New updates will be hitting the store sporadically. Including some new tee shirt designs, and prints. Keep an eye on the blog here, and I’ll let you know when they drop.

Back to the comic making grind + the goddamn batman!
November 11th, 2009 | by Marc
Slowly but surely I am recovering from the shows from a couple of weeks ago. The plan was to do the comics weekend and then Armageddon Expo, and then take a couple of weeks off to relax before getting back into the grind of making more ActionMan Adam comics. Unfortunately the first week “off” was spent trying to recover from a cold. So while that was technically time not spent making comics, should I count that as one of my relaxing weeks off or not? Heh. I’m trying to get my writers hat back on. It’s weird when you are the writer/artist sometimes. It’s like doing two very different jobs. The upside is, I can draw what ever I want to draw. The downside is, I still have to come up with all of those ideas and worry about making it work. Finding the right balance is still something I need to get used to. Gaining confidence in my art, is slowly letting me focus more time on trying to refine my writing. For years I had been focused, really, on improving only the artwork. I’ll be honest. I’m the art nerd. I got into comics because I like pretty pictures. It’s not until you start writing, that you appreciate a really well crafted story, because it is really hard to pull off. I have some ideas going on. I just need to refine, and make sure they are all golden. I think I am going to do well on some, and maybe not so well on others. You aren’t going to win them all, but hopefully you learn something along the way right?
How was your weekend? I spent my Saturday with my brother. Something I don’t get to do a lot of, just because we both live our own very busy lives. It was cool. I picked him up and we headed down to a beach here in Auckland and had some ice cream. You can’t beat that really. Is there anything more satisfying than an ice cream on a warm spring day? Later in the afternoon we busted out some PS3. I’ll be honest. I’m not much of a gamer. I used to be into it, in a big way back when I was younger. Around the same time I got into comics actually. I guess video games people and comics people are basically the same crowd. Or they were then. These days video games are mainstream, but comics still find it hard to compete. In 94 though, you could find me in front of the Sega system totally rocking out on the X-men video game. Or Sonic or something.
Things have changed! We hooked the PS3 up to my TV, and with the wireless downloaded a playable demo of that Batman: Arkham Asylum game. It was dope. I liked that they took the best parts of Batman and made that the game. It was reminiscent on Metal Gear Solid in that you have to be stealthy to get around your enemies. Unlike that Wolverine game (which was awesome for almost the opposite reason) you can’t just charge into any given scenario.
I loved the fact that they got Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill back for the voice character acting. After the animated series, there really was no other choice but to go with those guys. They own those characters. Just perfect for them. It was awesome hearing them again. It’s a shame the demo was so short. A lot of the download seemed to be the animated setup sequence. Which was cool to watch – once. After that though, obviously I just wanted to continue playing the game. Still it was free.
Now that I have seen the HD console on a proper HD TV, I can see why people are into their gaming. I could totally get into it. Maybe one day. For now though, I have comics to make.
Hope you had an awesome weekend too.

Marc!
